چکیده

Abstract Flush-mounted cavity hot-wire probes have emerged as an alternative to classical mounted several diameters above the surface for wall-shear stress measurements. They aim at increasing frequency response and accuracy by circumventing well-known issue of heat transfer substrate that hot-film possess. Their use, however, depends on assumption does not influence flow field. In this study, we show hold, turbulence statistics are modified presence with sizes practically in use. The mean velocity fluctuations increase near while shear decreases its surroundings, all seemingly stemming from fact no-slip condition is present anymore reversal occurs. Overall, energy spectra probability density function wall indicate a change nature cavity.

Wall Shear stress measurements in the atmosperhic surface layer

w data, valuable contributions have been made to the physical understanding of turbulence over an unprecedented range of Reynolds numbers. The shear stress measurements were made at the unique SLTEST (Surface Layer Turbulence and Environmental Science Test facility) site on the great salt lakes of Utah, pictured in figure 1. Winds over the site are known to remain strong and consistent for exte...

Spatial resolution correction for hot-wire anemometry in wall turbulence

We investigate spatial resolution issues in hot-wire anemometry measurements of turbulence intensity and energy spectra. Single normal hot-wire measurements are simulated by means of filtering direct numerical simulation (DNS) of turbulent channel flow at Res 1⁄4 934. Through analysis of the two-dimensional energy spectra from the DNS, the attenuation of the small-scale energy levels is documen...

The Influence of Spatial Resolution due to Hot-Wire Sensors on Measurements in Wall-Bounded Turbulence

Reassessment of compiled data reveal that recorded scatter in the hot-wire measured near-wall peak in viscous-scaled streamwise turbulence intensity is due in large part to the simultaneous competing effects of Reynolds number and viscous-scaled wire-length l ( lUτ ν, where l is the wirelength, Uτ is friction velocity and ν is kinematic viscosity). These competing factors can explain much of th...

Cavity mode related wire breaking of the SPS Wire Scanners and loss measurements of wire materials

During the SPS high intensity run 2002 with LHC type beam, the breaking of several of the carbon wires in the wire scanners has been observed in their parking position. The observation of large changes in the wire resistivity and thermionic electron emission clearly indicated strong RF heating that was depending on the bunch length. A subsequent analysis in the laboratory, simulating the beam b...
